From CSIC to BE-ST: why the innovation centre changed its name in 2022

On 27 April 2022, at an event marking the midway point between the COP26 and COP27 climate conferences, the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre unveiled a new name: Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST).

The change reflected a broader mission. The centre's partners now came from well beyond construction, and its work had spread geographically. The new identity was meant to put its core purpose up front: accelerating the move to a more sustainable, energy-efficient and circular built environment. The launch event was framed around "COP26 to COP27 – building the momentum", with the message that decarbonising the built environment is one of the biggest engineering challenges the UK faces.
